Business Interview Woman: Sandy Cross

Sandy Cross is Chief People Officer for the Professional Golfers’ Association of America, promoting innovation, creativity and collaboration. She also develops and manages the PGA’s Inclusion and Diversity Division to ensure the game of golf reflects the diversity of the country. A former NCAA Division I volleyball player, Cross began her career with the Cleveland Cavaliers before joining the PGA of America. Cross will speak at her Women in Business Summit this year.

How has your career changed since you started?

I grew up in countless ways. I am very privileged to work in different areas such as business development, player engagement, diversity, equity and inclusion, and human resources. , which fit very well with my way of thinking about growth. The business development area was highly competitive, while the diversity, equity, inclusion and people areas were highly collaborative. They require different approaches, but leading inclusively has always been my anchor.

How has the world of business changed?

The need and desire for inclusive leadership is greater than ever. Cultural intelligence, curiosity, recognizing one’s own biases, taking risks, collaborating, and staying on course in the face of adversity are essential traits in today’s business world.

What obstacles did you face?

The golf industry is consistently diverse in terms of who plays the game, who works in the industry, and who participates in the supply chain. But we have a long way to go before our games, workforce, and supply chains truly reflect the American demographic. The aftermath of the sport’s exclusive history stands in the way of our efforts to truly engage individuals of diverse backgrounds and identities. It is not easy to forget. Creating a genuine invitation to a golf safe and welcoming place or space is very important. We must make the industry aware that it has evolved and continues to evolve, clearing the way for gaming and business for everyone.

Were there any obstacles that surprised you?

How deep-rooted the wounds and damage are, understandably, from what happened decades ago. It has had a multigenerational negative impact on the sport’s growth trajectory.

What experience, training, or education prepared you the most?

My pre-college legal experience has always been invaluable in the various fields I have worked in. My first board experience on the Board of the Women’s Golf Association was also transformative.

What has been the most useful thing in your career?

Having a growth mindset helped me the most. I believe that in order to add real value and achieve personal and professional fulfillment, you must be hungry to learn in all situations.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

My mother always said, “When you come to a bridge, cross it.” I can’t move forward It’s important to be intentional, but things happen eventually and they take care of themselves.

What was one of the most interesting (or useful) things you learned this year?

The power of a team to be together in person. That’s where the magic happens in a way that video conferencing isn’t.The combination of balance and setting is important, but the moments that are actually together are really powerful for individuals and businesses. Our collective cup fills up every time.

what is your personal brand? how do you grow it?

I consistently strive to be an inclusive leader with an “others first” mindset committed to continuous growth and development. It requires daily, moment-to-moment nurturing and affects every interaction. I always have to keep that in mind and make sure my words and actions are consistent with what I am committed to.

What would you have liked to know sooner?

nothing. Everything happens in time. We are all on a journey of discovery and development at every moment.

What book has had the most impact on you and your career?

Strengths-Based Leadership: Great Leaders, with the team why people follow from Gallup.

What are the biggest mistakes women make when it comes to career advancement?

Instead of thinking there’s only one seat at the table and you have to compete with other women to get it, have each other’s backs and lift each other up. , room to grow and make an impact.

It’s become incredibly clichéd, but work-life balance is a recurring hurdle for me. Includes apps.

What do you think the future holds for women in business?

We believe there are incredible opportunities. The world of business is truly our oyster. We are the fastest growing segment of entrepreneurs. The number of challenges and obstacles we face is not in short supply, especially for women of color. Sometimes it’s a step forward, sometimes it’s two or three steps back, but if you’re willing to move forward, the opportunities are really great.
